What does luxury travel really mean?

Five tips for choosing your perfect holiday

Luxury travel is often associated with five-star hotels, beautiful beaches, private pools, fine dining, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. All of those things can be part of it, of course. But for me, true luxury is much more personal than that.

The right holiday is not always the most expensive one, the most famous hotel, or the destination everyone is talking about. It is the holiday that works for you.

That’s why choosing the right luxury holiday starts with understanding what you actually want from your time away.

1. Think about how you like to travel

Before you choose a destination or hotel, it helps to think about what you want the holiday to give you. Luxury begins with knowing what matters most to you.

The process of figuring this out is extremely enjoyable – a guided dream that we start turning into reality.

Some people love a detailed itinerary. Others want as little structure as possible. Some want the most exceptional room they can afford; others care more about the beach, restaurants, spa, children’s club, golf, service or setting.

There is no right or wrong answer. The important thing is to be clear about what will make the difference to your holiday.

If you’re travelling as a family, the practical details matter. Things like room layout, transfer times, dining options, children’s facilities and the general atmosphere of the hotel can completely change the experience.

If you’re travelling as a couple, you may instead prioritise privacy, service, restaurants, views, spa, location or a sense of occasion.

And if you’re embarking on a solo trip, you may want somewhere that feels safe, welcoming, easy to navigate and comfortable without feeling too isolated.

The best holiday is the one that fits the way you actually want to travel and how you want your time away to feel.

2. Don’t choose a hotel on looks alone

Photos can tell you a lot about a hotel, but they can’t tell you how it works in real life.

They won’t always show whether the location is convenient, whether the service is consistent, whether the rooms are practical or whether the atmosphere suits the kind of holiday you want.

This is where considered planning matters. A hotel can be exceptional and still be wrong for you.

Equally, the best choice may not always be the most obvious one.

I will never recommend a hotel on photos alone; every property is either seen first-hand or properly researched before it becomes part of your trip.

3. Value matters too

Luxury travel should feel special, but it should also feel considered.

For me, honest value is an important part of the process. That means understanding what you are paying for, where it is worth spending more and where a different choice might give you a better experience.

The best value is different for every trip.

A certain room category may be worth every penny if it changes the experience, while in another hotel it may add very little. A famous name can be reassuring, but it is not always the ideal fit.

For one family, an all-inclusive resort might offer real ease and value; while for another, a more bespoke itinerary may be worth it for the access, service or experience it creates.

The point is to spend well – with first-hand knowledge, trusted suppliers and informed recommendations that combine to noticeably improve your time away.

4. Ask the right questions before you book

Before committing to a luxury holiday, ask yourself:

  • What do I want this holiday to give me?

  • How do I want the days to feel?

  • Do I want rest, adventure, culture, privacy, ease, or a mixture?

  • What has worked well on previous holidays?

  • What has disappointed me before?

  • What details would make the biggest difference?

  • Am I choosing this because it is right for me, or because it looks impressive?

These simple yet important questions can completely change the direction of a trip.

5. Let an expert plan your dream holiday

Luxury travel should never be one-size-fits-all. The right holiday should reflect your priorities, your pace, your budget and the way you want to spend your time away.

A brilliant destination with the wrong hotel can end up disappointing. A beautiful hotel in the wrong location can make the trip harder than it needs to be. A stunning itinerary can lose its magic if it’s too rushed.

A family holiday can feel very different depending on whether the practical details have been properly considered.

When everything works together, the whole holiday feels exactly how you wanted it to.

At Virtuoso Luxury Travel, our aim is to connect the destination, accommodation, service, logistics and experiences in a way that makes sense for you. That is what good planning should do.
